Anglian Water has been crowned the best place to work in Britain according to latest league tables from recruitment website Glassdoor, which uses anonymous staff feedback. 

The utilities company was ranked number two last year but has managed to knock search engine giant Google off the top spot.

It beat Bain & Company and XPO Logistics, which finished second and third respectively.

It is the recruitment website’s 11th annual employees’ choice awards. It names the best places to work, focusing on employers in Britain, France, Germany, the US (large, small and medium enterprises) and Canada.

The awards are decided by employees of companies who give anonymous feedback on the website reviewing their job, environment and employer over the course of the past year.

Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor chief economist, said: ‘In today’s tight labour market, job seekers are in the driver’s seat when it comes to deciding where to work and they want to know the inner workings of a company before accepting a new job.

‘To help people find the best jobs and the best companies, the Glassdoor employees’ choice awards recognise employers at the top of their game. 

‘For employers, we know that a satisfied and engaged workforce helps drive financial performance.

‘Glassdoor best places to work winners are strategically investing in company culture, career growth opportunities and more, which also serves as a major recruiting advantage.’

The top ten UK Best Places to Work in 2019 are:

1. Anglian Water (4.5 rating)

It may be a surprising choice that a utilities company came first in approval ratings, the only one to make the top ten, but with over 4,500 employees, Anglian must be doing something right.

It is a water and sewage company that operates in the East of England and Hartlepool, supplying water and water recycling services to more than six million domestic and business customers. 

One employee praised the ‘positive culture’ that Anglian provides, saying that the workforce is ‘proud, passionate and really cares about the work they do.’

Another employee said: ‘[Anglian is] a company truly dedicated to putting customers at the heart of everything it does, with a strong focus on employee engagement.’

2. Bain & Company (4.5 rating)

Bain & Company comes in at number two after not being featured on the top 50 at all last year. 

The global management consultancy firm is based in America, one of the ‘Big Three’ management consultants alongside McKinsey and Boston Consulting Group, and currently has 8,000 employees.

Bain London was the firm’s first office outside of the US that serves a variety of clients including international, multinational, FTSE 100, Fortune 500 and nonprofit organisations. 

The firm advises global leaders on their most critical issues and opportunities as well as working with business executives to help them make better decisions.

One employee said of the firm: ‘[There is a] fantastic culture, smart, motivated, inspirational people who genuinely care about each other and their clients.’

3. XPO Logistics (4.5 rating)

XPO is up from number 28 last year to land a place in the top three. One of the world’s largest providers of transportation and logistics services, XPO was founded in 1989 and now operates in 32 countries around the world.

The firm boasts over 98,000 employees in 1,520 locations with 197 of these sites currently based in the UK.

An employee said on Glassdoor: ‘Everyone helps each other to achieve success. The work atmosphere is relaxed but everyone is required to accomplish the high standards we provide.’

4. Bromford (4.5 rating)

Bromford has fallen down one place since last year’s awards even though its rating has improved from a 4.4 to a 4.5. 

The firm provides affordable housing as well as specialist housing support services that aims to reduce welfare-dependency and generate social value in employment, education, health and community safety. 

The company has operated for 50 years, covering many areas of the UK but mainly Central England and the South West.

One worker said about the company: ‘Great colleagues, flexible working, excellent training, innovative and your opinions matter.’

5. Salesforce (4.4 rating)

Salesforce currently has 29,000 employees across its numerous sites and is a non-mover, keeping its number 5 position. 

The American company uses cloud-based software technology to help its customers as well as selling commercial applications of social networking.

Its main product is its customer relationship management software that uses data analysis about a customer’s history with a company to improve business relationships with customers. 

A Glassdoor review of the company said: ‘Great to work in an exciting and fast paced environment. Teams are full of talented individuals and the company supports your career aspirations and development.’

6. Sky Betting & Gaming (4.4 rating)

Rising eleven spots from number 17 last year, Sky has worked its way into the top ten. 

The company, founded in 2001, is a British-based gaming company born out of Sky that has headquarters in Leeds and West Yorkshire as well as offices in Sheffield, London, Guernsey, Rome and Germany.

It currently has upwards of 1,400 employees and claims that it is aiming to be the UK’s best digital business.

One employee said of the company: ‘[It is] vibrant, exciting, fast-paced. A place to think big and really achieve things you couldn’t in other businesses.’

7. Hiscox (4.4 rating)

The insurance provider has moved up a position from number eight last year, improving from a 4.3 to a 4.4 rating.

The London Stock Exchange listed company specialises in niche areas of the market, including property and casualty insurance as well as offering cover against such risks as kidnapping, hacking and satellite damage.  

An employee said: ‘The workplace is friendly and communications is open, technology is available to allow a fantastic work/home balance, with facilities to work from home.’

8. SAP (4.4 rating)

SAP has moved up the ranks by 40 places, to reach the number eight spot. 

The software corporation makes enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations. It has regional offices in 180 countries, serving over 335,000 customers.  

An employee said: ‘Culture, innovations, self development, career opportunities, brand, benefits, salary, SAP really takes good care of its employees.’

SAP is the only employer that made it on five lists (Germany, number 1; Canada, number 3; UK, number 8; France, number 23; U.S. large, number 27).

9. Taylor Wimpey (4.4 rating)

Taylor Wimpey has risen six places from last year’s awards, reaching 9th place. It is one of the UK’s largest residential developers that builds over 10,000 homes each year.

It is a creation of a merger between rival companies Taylor Woodrow and George Wimpey in 2007, which now has 24 regional offices across England, Scotland and Wales. 

The FTSE 100 company is also on the London Stock Exchange.  

An employee said of the firm: ‘Fantastic environment, great culture, support, training opportunities, business direction and strategic approach to the industry.’

10. Royal London (4.4 rating)

Royal London, has moved up nine spaces from number 19 last year. 

The largest mutual life assurance, pensions and investment company in the UK is owned by its customers. 

As of 2017, group funds are under management of £100billion and group businesses provide around 9million policies and employ 3,253 people.

An employee said: ‘Very people focused and encourages development and opportunities. Flexible working is offered and the working environment is great.’

Who didn’t make the top ten? 

Microsoft just missed out on making the top ten this year, coming in at number 11, rising from its place at number 24 last year.

Other top firms that made the top 50 list include Ikea (number 16), Intercontinental Hotels Group (number 23) and Wagamama (number 41).

Previous number one, Google (number 13), J.P Morgan (number 30) and PWC (number 45) are the only three employers that have made the UK list every year (2015-2019).

The ratings that the companies are given by Glassdoor is based on a 5-point scale where 1 = very dissatisfied, 3 = OK and 5 = very satisfied. 

Over 830,000 employers were reviewed on Glassdoor with the average company rating coming in at 3.4. 

The site compiles the results by making sure that employers that are considered have received at least 30 ratings for each of the eight workplace attributes, including overall company rating, career opportunities, compensation and benefits and work/life balance.
