The 33-year-old showed off his Nike boots with the caption: ‘A special year. A special prize. Thank you everyone @nikefootball.’

The Ballon d’Or winner was emotional on the night he was presented with the award and is looking to achieve more with Real Madrid.

Modric said: ‘It’s difficult to find the words to express how I feel. I’m very happy and grateful to everyone who recognised my journey. I held back the tears, it’s been an exceptional night to form part of these players who have won this prize.’

Modric said of his rivals, as quoted in Marca: ‘[Antoine] Griezmann and [Kylian] Mbappe have congratulated me, it’s a dream year. As a person I want more with my team, starting with the World Club Cup.’

‘I said, I think last time when I won The Best, I would change all my individual awards for the World Cup, unfortunately it didn’t happen,’ Modric told reporters. ‘This success we achieved at the World Cup for such a small country like Croatia is something amazing.

‘But, like I told you, I would change all of this for a World Cup. It didn’t happen, this is a great feeling to win at least this, and very happy for it.’

AS newspaper’s back page showed a picture of the Real Madrid squad with the Balon d’Or as Modric dedicated the award to his teammates.

The former Tottenham midfielder won the Champions League with Real Madrid last campaign and finished as a runner-up with Croatia at the World Cup.

Modric was the first player to win the award that wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in over a decade.

Santiago Solari’s side play Melilla in the Copa Del Rey on Thursday.
